Sustainable living starts with chickens
Are you considering adding a touch of sustainable living and homegrown goodness to your life? Raising a backyard flock of chickens can offer a myriad of benefits far beyond fresh eggs. These engaging birds provide a direct connection to your food source and promote a more environmentally conscious lifestyle by helping reduce food waste, control pests, and create nutrient-rich compost for your garden. They can also offer surprising levels of entertainment and companionship, becoming quirky additions to your household and providing valuable educational opportunities for children of all ages.
The challenges of raising chickens
Raising chickens, while rewarding, presents several challenges that require careful consideration. A primary concern is providing adequate and secure housing, as chickens need enough space in their coop (at least 3-4 square feet per bird) and in an enclosed run (10 square feet per bird) to thrive,
These enclosures must be built with sturdy materials like hardware cloth to deter predators like raccoons, foxes, and hawks that pose a constant threat to flocks. Beyond basic necessities, owners must dedicate time to daily care, including feeding, watering, egg collection, and regularly cleaning the coop to manage the accumulation of waste and control pests like flies and rodents. The health of the flock also needs close monitoring, as chickens are susceptible to various diseases, including bacterial infections and parasites, requiring vigilant observation and sometimes costly veterinary intervention. Finally, depending on the location, local ordinances and potential disputes with neighbors regarding noise, odors, or free-ranging chickens can add another layer of complexity to the chicken-raising endeavor.
I love chickens
I’m Valerie. By day I am a financial planner but any spare second I find is dedicated to my love of chickens. I didn’t know a thing about building coops or raising chickens when I got my first flock in 2016. My first few coops were not what you call pretty but each time I build a new one, I learn a little more: how to make it more secure against predators, how to access the inside easier, where my chickens like to hang out…and I continue to learn more.
In 2024 I found myself in between jobs with three months to kill so I let curiosity rule the day. I saw that traditional chicken tractors are boring, clunky, and require constant monitoring to prevent bare spots in your lawn and keep your hens happy. I thought, how funny would it be if there was a chicken coop rumba thing that moved around the lawn and also provided breakfast? …and Lawn Chicks was born! My actions are largely motivated with joy and fun as the end goal and I hope that is what your Lawn Chick brings to you.
